Here's something to do.
The idea is to pick a junk dupe of a card you like (but are willing to "sacrifice") and carry it around in your wallet for a full year, occasionally taking pictures of it on your travels or wherever, and share them on your blog. Sort of like the Cards in Odd Places feature I've done a couple times.
It should be a card that makes you smile every time you see it, since you'll probably be seeing a lot of it. If size/weight is a concern, consider choosing a mini.
Here's the card I picked for 2015.
Can't go wrong with a Gwynn. The '88 Topps All-Stars are so-bad-they're-good.
I didn't get this puppy in my wallet until today (January 2nd)-- forgot yesterday. But close enough.
I should have done this last year, as my Hawaiian wedding would have presented many nice photo-ops. Still though, I'm hopeful for some neat shots with the card as the year progresses.
I want to turn it into a fun game everyone with a blog can play. Just pick a card for yourself, put it in your wallet, and occasionally take photos of it. The winner is whoever posts the coolest photos of their card during the year. (No altering/shopping beyond cropping and maybe a filter or something. It's a photography game, not a Photoshop contest.) Winner gets.. I don't know, something, I guess. If we get a few serious entries, I'll find something good for a prize.
Speaking of friendly card blog rivalries.
Any blog out there taking the reins for hosting the 2014 Card Blog Awards? Jaybarkerfan used to do it, but then he retired from blogging. Daniel did some bonus awards (including the Best New Blog award that I'm way too proud of winning) but I'm not sure if he intends to keep it going this year. I hope somebody does something, though, and may do it myself if nobody else does.
Totally doing the wallet card game. Someone remind me I'm doing this.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing it too. I'm going to use a 2012 Gypsy Queen Mini of Roberto Clemente.
ReplyDeleteI've already been doing this for two years with a 2010 Topps Chrome Jorge Posada. Guess it's about time I switch to a Luis Torrens chrome from 2014 Bowman Draft though.
ReplyDeleteCount me as a participant. I will debut my card in a post tomorrow.
ReplyDeletecount me in also--looking for that special card now
ReplyDeletefinally added my wallet card

I'm in! Just slipped a 1992 Topps Darryl Kile into my wallet. One of my favorite players on a design from the year I was born. Seems fitting to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna do this too...I'll pick a card tomorrow! I think I already know what it's gonna be tho...
ReplyDeleteI'm in for the card thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have been bouncing around an idea for the Blog of the Year award. Maybe I'll get a post up Sunday about that.
I used to do this with Tino years ago. Now I do the whole front pocket money clip. Not sure if a card will fit, but I'll try. Maybe I'll use a Topps mini or something.
ReplyDeleteI went with a 1997 Collector's Choice Tino. Loved those sets growing up. Plus gotta have a Tino on me if I bump into him again! I had to remove two of my business cards to make it fit...but whatever I never give them out anyways.
Deletefun idea!...Maybe Oscar Tavares?
ReplyDeleteI'm in!!! But I may not start until after the move next weekend(I've already started packing, and the collection was the first to get boxed up).
ReplyDeleteNo specific card is jumping to mind yet, but I'll be down as soon as I replace my ratty old wallet.
ReplyDeleteI am in. I am going to use 2011 Topps #552 which shows Buster Posey and Brian Wilson celebrating the SF Giants first World Series victory. Great celebration card with AT&T's right field wall in the background.
ReplyDeleteI'm in as well! Glad to see that JediJeff is considering doing the awards this year.
ReplyDeleteTwo guesses as to whose rookie card is in my wallet now...
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun! Does condition of the card matter? My wallet will not be kind to a card - will get squished!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteI have a blog and a random 1993 Upper Deck Joe Boever that's been on my kitchen counter - it may not survive a day in my wallet, but I'm in.
ReplyDeleteI'm new 'round these parts but what better way to get acquainted than over a picture of a beat up 1986 Topps Lenny Dykstra! It'll make me smile because of how much my dad and I liked to watch him dive head first into a....bag of chewing tobacco...and then first base. Thanks for the invite!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely going to join in on this - I've got a smallish wallet so a mini might be in order.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea. I'm down like James Brown.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. I'm in.
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time doing this to a card. But I hate the '90 Donruss cards. I'll stick a whole team set of '90d Mets cards in my wallet.
ReplyDeleteI found an '88 Topps Ryne Sandberg. I'm in!
ReplyDeleteI'm in too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. The search for my wallet card will now begin.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like too much fun to pass up. I'm in!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm normally a hockey guy, but I only had one card in mind for this game...
Oscar Gamble!!! Afro and all.

First time reader of your blog thanks to the Night Owl. Although I don't have a blog and I don't plan on starting one I'm in the experiment just for my enjoyment. I'll start off with one of my diamond cut 75 minis that are in excellent shape. Time to search my box of 1975 baseball cards.
ReplyDeleteJust found you! I seem
ReplyDeleteTo be the outta loop
Blogger. I want to give this a try as well now to find a card...
i used to carry a 1974 topps steve garvey card in my wallet in the late 90's. i sent that copy to him to sign (which he did) so i'll have to see if i have another copy to put in my wallet for this year...
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea. I'm in with a 1989 Mike Schmidt Upper Deck.
ReplyDeleteFirst time reader. Really like this idea and I've decided to jump on board! Just picked out what card I'm going to use and placed it in my wallet. Will post the first blog post later.

I finally made the decision for which card I want to make my wallet card and I am on board.
ReplyDeleteCount me in! Already posted.
ReplyDeleteA little late to the game, but getting there...
ReplyDeleteI'm really late to this party, but want to join. I've carried the same card in my wallet for over 20 years now. It's beat to hell and about ten years ago I wrapped the whole thing in packing tape after I sent my wallet through the wash by mistake.
