Do you still listen to CDs? Want some?

October is ROCKTOBER on Baseball Card Breakdown! And by that I just mean I'll be posting more music-related content than normal. Still plenty of baseball cards too, though, I promise. But yeah, expect several posts featuring stuff like my musical memorabilia and autographs of musicians.

A big project I've been working on lately is ripping mp3s of every audio CD in my house. See, the thing is my wife is thankfully forgiving of my card collection, though in general she is against my "collecting hoarding" tendencies. One particular collection of my stuff that annoys her is my CD collection. She rightly likes to point out that I rarely listen to CDs anymore. I'm all about mp3s these days. Especially now that I take public transportation to work.. back when I drove more, I listened to CDs in the car. Now I stick with my iPod or smartphone. So the CDs basically just take up room.

Back when I moved from San Diego to Portland, I got rid of about 80% of my CDs, just bringing the cream of the crop up with me. And now, I'm going to get rid of the majority of what I kept. I'm going to try to narrow down to maybe just my top 20 or so favorites to hang onto, plus anything autographed.

I'd love to see as many of these CDs as possible go to good homes rather than just dump them at Goodwill. So I'm putting out a call... Do you still listen to CDs? Want some? The majority of what I've got is 90s alternative rock (the likes of Nirvana, Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, and lesser-known indie rock ilk), but also some older stuff (Beatles, Jimi, John Coltrane).

Here's the deal:
I'd like to offer to send CDs out to readers of my blog for just the price of postage, paypaled (US only). The easiest way to do it is with USPS flat-rate boxes.
- Small Flat Rate Box: $7.15 (fits 4 standard sized CDs)
- Medium Flat Rate Box: $13.60 (fits 45 CDs)
- Large Flat Rate Box: $18.85 (fits 69 CDs.. nice!)

I'll fill up the boxes as much as I can. If you don't want plastic cases, that could likely double or triple the amount of CDs that are able to fit in a box.

Just let me know what you're interested in, and we'll see what we can do. I'd also be happy to give recommendations based on what you like. (Sorry to country music fans, as that's one genre I don't really touch.)

Now, you know I'm too lazy to type up all the CDs I've got available, so I'm just going to post a few pictures. Please note that there are a handful of rare/valuable CDs that I'll probably try to sell for a few bucks on eBay, so not all of the pictured CDs are available for the "yours for the price of shipping" deal.. but the vast majority are. Oh, and I also haven't pulled out my "top 20" to keep yet (a future post, perhaps?), so some of these I might nix. There are also a few burnt CDRs in here, but those should be easily identifiable for the most part. If you're interested in anything, please please get in touch and let me help these CDs find loving homes!

Update! Here are some of the CDs that are no longer available:
Beatles, REM, Nirvana, GNR, RHCP

Just leave a comment and/or drop me an email if you're interested in anything.

Thanks!

  1. I had the same problem when I moved in (or out, depending on how you see it) with my girlfriend. I already had my 2000 someting cds digitalized (took me forever) but I couldn't get myself to get rid of them. I'm way too attached to objects. What I did though is I got read of all the plasti cases and put the cds in sleeves. Takes up way less room. I kept the Cd cases I was really, really attached to (300 or so) but that's about it. Great collection, and I see we definitely have similar taste in music !

    1. Thanks, Kevin! That's a good idea about tossing out the plastic cases.. I'll likely end up doing that with most of the CDs I hang onto.

  2. You, sir, have excellent taste in music. Had to do a double take when I saw the Mercury Rev...

I got rid of most of my CD's but am now in a constant state of fear that somehow my computer and both ipods will all spontaneously combust at the same time and I'll never recover what is lost.

    1. Thanks, Rob!

I'm planning a Mercury Rev-centric post for this month.. just more autographs from them last week!

And yeah, I feel ya regarding a crash costing me all my music. I've got all my stuff backed up twice (2 different external hard drives), and I'm still a little uneasy about it.

  3. Cool idea Gav. I still listen to cd's . Listen to vinyl and cassettes also. Even have a working 8 track player w/ 400 8 tracks. Don't play them to often. I have satellite radio in my truck and two separate systems hard wired in my house. Also listen to pandora on my iPad and phone. Play it thru a Bose system at home. Still don't own an iPod.i think our taste in music is different or I would grab a few

    1. Very cool. 8 track was before my time, but I remember getting a kick out of them when I dug out some from my grandparents' garage. I think I still have a Yellow Submarine 8 track somewhere from a thrift store.

  5. I see a single CD from Oingo Boingo, which makes you incredibly smart. Plus a nice grouping of The Smiths.

  6. That's very generous of you. Hope these will find a good home. I cleansed my CD collection years ago too. Kept about 100-120... but they've all been uploaded to my computer, so I haven't touched them. Pretty much kept them around for sentimental reasons (just like a lot of my cards).

    1. Yeah, it's not easy letting them go. And you just know that in like 10-20 years, CDs are going to come back in style like vinyl and start being worth a lot of money. LOL. I'll be kicking myself for getting rid of them.

  7. I think my wife has more cd's than me so I have had no pressure to get rid of mine. Seeing the porno for pyros cd's brings back a lot of memories.

    1. Sounds good. I think somebody else beat you to the Beatles via email, but the others haven't been spoken for yet. Just drop me an email and we'll work it out.

  9. Any Modest Mouse?

Sidenote, I once had people send me cards inside the CD case, a very creative way to securely send cards.

    1. I've got some Modest Mouse albums via mp3, but no CDs, sorry to say.

And yeah, sending cards in CD cases sounds like a good way to get rid of empty cases besides just throwing them away. They sure crack easily, but would assume the cards inside would be fine.

  10. Cat Stevens - Songs from Harold and Maude. I can't find this cd anywhere and would love to have it Gavin!
