So, how do you get people to read your blog?

Now that I've got a couple weeks and a few posts under my belt, I feel like I should let people know this blog exists. Sure, Baseball Card Breakdown won't turn the world of sportscard blogging on its head or anything, but I gotta figure there are a handful of guys out there who would enjoy it.

I know so far I've mainly been hung up on 2004 Topps Retired, but in the future I plan to branch out more with what I write about. I've got a few post ideas kicking around in my head. While I doubt I'll ever be a daily blogger, my realistic goal will be posting once or twice a week.

So, how do I go about cramming one more page into the already populous baseball card blogosphere? Again, I'm somewhat of a newb to Blogspot. Is it like Twitter where you follow/connect to people and then if they're feeling magnanimous they follow you back? Do you just comment on other blogs and maybe people will check out your blog through there?

I need to learn how to add a list of blogs on the rightside column. And I see a lot of blogs with a little "Followers" section over there, and a "Join This Site" button, but I'm not sure how that works. I guess I'll try messing around and see what happens.

Feedback is welcomed!

  1. I've gotten a few people reading the blog by following/joining their's (as you've already mentioned), but I think I've gotten more by making trades. Emailing/commenting about trading is a good step, but also, when the trade is complete, people post about what they got and mention your blog. I did a trade with Night Owl early on that tripled my readership (it's not that hard to triple really small numbers). Not that my blog is turning the world upside down either, but I get a lot of Padre cards set aside for me in trades, which was one of my main reasons to start the thing in the first place.

Lots of bloggers also do contests/giveaways to attract readers (nothing gets more hits than a post with the words "contest" or "free" in the title), but that can sometimes come across as gimmicky and forced (not always, though, and can sometimes help reach the desired outcome).

    Good luck!

  2. I'll give you a shout out on mine if I can ever get posting again. Mostly its just about writing interesting stuff. I don't write so well, so I only have a moderate following, but I'm sure you can do better!

  4. Great topic. I'm always looking for ways to add new readers myself. Here are a few things that helped me over the years:

    A. Joining the Sports Card Blogroll. If you're not already on it, just Google it. That's where I come across most of my new blogs.
    B. Supporting other card blogs by reading their posts and leaving comments.
    C. Completing trades with other bloggers.
    D. Holding contests. I know this seems like cheating, but I'm sure that the majority of my followers have come from them.

Best of luck. I'll add you to my roll right now.

  6. I received an email a couple of weeks ago about your site, but have been too sick to actually get on the computer at home to do this. But now I'm much better and I'm happy to say that...

Your site has now been added to the Sports Card Blogroll.

    Sincerely,
