Bonds Exchange and a new Padres Endeavor

Notable blog reader mr. haverkamp perked up at the Barry Bonds Bowman Heritage auto featured in my Hall of Fame picks post a couple weeks back. He's working on a display piece and had been looking for this particular card for inclusion. He made me a trade offer for it that included a different Bonds certified auto plus a few more cards from my wantlist. I wasn't all that attached to the Bowman Bonds, so I was agreeable to the deal.

2002 Topps Ten Certified Autograph Issue #TTA-BB - Barry Bonds
I like it! I even put it in the same ostentatious shiny purple screw-down case my old Bonds auto was in.

Also included in our trade was this mint-ass 1970 Harmon Killebrew off my Desperate Double Dozen wantlist. Awesome bat-rack shot. Very happy to add this to the Killer PC.

But what really sealed the deal for me was this lot of five 1987 Bohemian Hearth Bread Padres. You've got a HOFer in Goose, plus a rookie-year Kruk, big smile from Carmelo, Poppa McCullers, and baseball lifer Larry Bowa. Sweet selection!

From my pre-collecting days of childhood, the earliest baseball cards I remember owning were a handful of 1980 Topps and these yellow oddballs, which my household must've gotten from a loaf of bread. Now 30+ years later I'm hoping to complete 1980 Topps this year and eventually get all these bread cards. This lot pushes me over the hump and I'm down to needing just 8 more cards to finish off the 22-card set. These buggers never pop up on COMC and rarely on eBay (although there's currently a complete set available for $65 that I might've considered if I hadn't already made such good progress on my set), so receiving them in trades is very much appreciated. Thanks again, mr. haverkamp!

And speaking of the Padres, here's a new thing I've been working on getting off the ground:

Believe it or not, I feel like I kinda repress my Padres fandom somewhat here on the blog and at my @breakdowncards Twitter account. I'd like Baseball Card Breakdown to be thought of as a "general baseball/cards" place, not too focused on my favorite team. So, inspired by Marcus' @PadreCards side Twitter account, I decided to start a side Twitter account of my own, where I could go buckwild with Padres content without worrying about alienating my non-SD-backing readers. So if you're a Padres fan and/or want to get a closer look at my Padre card collection, give me a follow at @PadresBreakdown. It's gonna be a lot of fun. I'll also be using it as a forum to shed some of my excess Padres cards, so expect frequent giveaways there.

Here's giveaway #1. Once I reach 100 followers on @PadresBreakdown, I'll give away this prize package highlighted by a certified Jerry Coleman auto to a lucky re-tweeter.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend, everybody!

  1. I follow the Padres a little closer now that they have a minor leaguer at AA that went to the same high school as I did. His name is Eric Lauer, and is a left hand pitcher that is the number 8 ranked player in the Padres system. There was talk he may get invited to the big league camp this spring. I am trying to find cards of his but have not had any luck yet.

  5. Mr. Haverkamp is a great guy. I've met him on several occasions at this local show we attend. Never seen these 1987 Bohemian Hearth Bread Padres before. Cool oddball issue. I'm gonna need to track down the Gwynn for the collection.
