This card had a cameo in my previous post, so figured I might as well make it the featured refractor this week.
This 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites refractor features a young Harmon Killebrew on a 1969 Topps design. That happens to be the year he won AL MVP, no coincidence. Looks like this picture is a tight crop of a larger photo with at least one other Twin, as we can see a teammate's shoulder behind Harmon, though it's got the "bumpy" effect over it, as is typical for ATFF and Heritage backgrounds when Topps gives them the Chrome treatment.
The hope for these little weekly summertime contests is to get to 9 winners, since we're celebrating 9 years of Baseball Card Breakdown, and so far we're 3-for-5. But I think I've come up with a good solution.. After week 9, I'll basically do like a "card draft" with the folks who entered the most often without winning where they can make a list of their preferences from the prize pool, and I'll just put together well-weighted PWEs for those folks. So like, if we have 5 contest winners after the 9 weeks, then the 4 people who entered most without winning would be eligible for the draft. Sound good?
Alright, thanks for taking a moment out of your day for refraction appreciation. Enjoy your weekend, guys. How's the weather where you are? Here in Portland looks like it'll be the last nice weekend before entering the hellscape that seems to bake the city every year around the last week of July and/or the first week of August. Not looking forward to that!
It's been terribly hot and dry where I live (PA). That's honestly quite odd though, most years it seems our summers have been super wet (and not all that warm). I'll take the heat, at least my veggie garden isn't drowning this year. My # is 164.
ReplyDeleteLove the refractor - and the SportClix figure! I have a bunch of those somewhere but I didn't know they had "legends" as part of the game.
It's not 164, sorry to say. But thanks for playing!
DeleteAnd yeah, I don't know much about the figure.. received it from a trader bud a few years back. I think I've already had to superglue him on once and may have to again soon, as the poor fella was starting to lean over after that photo.
What a great looking card! I was going to pick 164 before Nachos beat me to it. I'll say 184 instead!
ReplyDeleteI'll guess 154, my first thought was 164 too. And I like the card draft idea! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNah 194.
ReplyDeleteNot many remember that Killebrew finished his career with the Royals. I had an opportunity to chat with him at a card show for several minutes. He was very nice and a pleasure to talk with him. I was surprised to be told he had signed a 2 year contract with the Royals, but said the artificial turf was too hard on his knees to play more than one year.
ReplyDeleteMy guess in 064.
Thanks for the contest!
That Reggie thing is cool. 134
ReplyDeleteding ding ding - It is #134.. Congrats, Fuji! Let me know your picks and I'll send them out soon.
DeleteGiven the detective work that a lot of the bloggers are able to pull off, you could've probably given an extra entry to the person who identified the teammate. I have no doubt that someone would've been able to.
ReplyDeleteBummer, I'm late for my guess, but congrats to Fuji! We were baking in Chicagoland until the weeknd, when heavy sgtorms came through. It's been more comfortable this week so far.
