If They Were Full-Bleed

Here's a new series called If They Were Full-Bleed where we use Photoshop to reimagine old designs if they had been borderless, a style that came to prominence in the early 90s. Sound like fun?!

Let's take a look!

There's a fine looking card! This one even got imaginarily graded!

Here's an alternate-reality 1971 Topps. What's cooler than black borders? NO borders!

Fast-forwarding to 1992, here's what the flagship set might've looked like had it been a bit more inspired by Stadium Club.

That's it for today. What do you think?

The Many Rated Rookies of Sandy Alomar, Jr

In 1989, Donruss rightfully noted that Sandy Alomar, Jr. was a hot catching prospect for San Diego and marked his card a Rated Rookie.

In 1990, they again gave his card a Rated Rookie logo.

By 1991, they were addicted and just couldn't stop themselves!!!

They were maniacally bent on rating Sandy Alomar's status as rookie!

Now you're just embarrassing yourselves, Donruss!

Oh, for the love of..

Give it up, Donruss!

Ok, ok, all but the first 2 of these are obviously fake, I admit. The fact the 2014 Donruss card has team logos gives it away.

Baseball Card Mashup: Ripken Insanity. Ripkinsanity!

Baseball Card Mashup is a feature here where we take popular cards and mix them around via Photoshop in ways that may very well hurt your brain and anger your sense of reason. But maybe, just maybe, it'll make you think, and open your mind a little. Perhaps even make you a better person.

For this hotly-anticipated second installment, we'll be having some "what if?" fun with the Ripken family.

Well well, here's an odd card.

Imagine how embarrassed Topps would be if they let this card slip by their Quality Assurance department! That'd be quite a blunder, indeed!

And how about this alternate reality..? What if that infamous '89 Fleer card wasn't Bill's, but Cal's?

I'll bet at the very least, Cal would have needed to take a game off to do some damage control, thereby never eclipsing Gehrig's record. Fans might have turned on him and he likely would have spiraled into a deep depression and been out of the game by 1990, to soon be all but forgotten, except by card collectors who remember him only as "the Fuck Face card guy."

But enough obscenity and dystopian visions, let's end on a sweet one. Here's a nice family shot for Ma Ripken.

Awwww...

Thanks for taking this strange trip with me. See ya next time.

Baseball Card Mashup: bizarro Griffey RC's!

New feature. Baseball Card Mashup will take well-known cards and mush them up via Photoshop in ways that may hurt your brain to look at.
Ok, here we go.

Can you imagine? Maybe Upper Deck would have flamed out. Maybe Fleer would have rose to be a more respected brand? Who knows.

What do you think?

Personally, I think Score's Ken Griffey, Jr RC is his best. Too bad it didn't make the base set and instead got relegated to the Rookie & Traded factory set where it languishes in relative obscurity.

What if back in '88, Score got a jump on everyone and made Griffey their #1 card? Maybe the company's fortunes would have turned out differently.

Ok, I wasn't planning on doing this, but damn it, now I want to see it.. so looks like I'll be tangenting into Cards That Never Were territory.

Yeah, I was lazy and just used his dad's card and didn't bother altering the text (besides trying to turn LF in CF), but it gets the point across. If that was the first card in Score's first-ever set, we'd all have a lot more respect for Score today, I'd bet.

We'll see ya next time for another installment of Baseball Card Mashup!
