Ai blog comments.. gross

Yep, we're at that point now: Artificial Intelligence powered comments left on blog posts.

Turns out automated blog-reading spambots left a ton of comments on my latest Vintage Frankenset post. Normally I delete spam when I see it, but honestly I was a bit awed by the advanced modern assault on morality.

The Ai had clearly been trained by pouring through countless blog posts and comments, now able to determine the kinds of comments that real people would make based on the text of a post. The type of spam comments that we typically see on Blogger are easy to spot, especially when there are a bunch together. The photoless avatar and string of random malicious links are a dead giveaway. The text of the spam comments is usually something like, "Thank you for this very informative article! [spam link here]" which could be used indiscriminately on any post. But now, these Ai spam comments are saying the kinds of thing that readers would actually say. Here's a sampling..

Yeah, god damn it, each card does tell a story, not just about the player but also its journey into my collection. But I don't want a spambot with malicious intent telling me that! It picks a line to parrot back to you, pointing out the implied subtext.

Sure would be nice if Google did something to try to deal with this new problem, but slim chance. Google can't even work it out with their Chrome web browser that when we click on links on our Blogger reading list, we don't need the annoying "Redirect Notice" page they make you go through, like they're doing you a fucking favor. So dumb! (and yeah, right-click opening in a new tab can avoid it, but it's still stupid that Google can't get on the same page with two of their own products.)

Anyways, the world is a horrible place and will only continue getting worse until humans go extinct.

Thanks for reading! :)

  2. It really is getting out of control. Because of this post, I just checked the comments for my blog (I moderate each one). I had a bunch that I hadn't approved (never was notified!), and some were marked as Spam that actually weren't. Just yesterday, my wife showed me where AI caused a huge issue on my HOA's Facebook page about barking dogs in the neighborhood. The guy who posted about it "was new to the neighborhood" and "couldn't believe there were no noise ordinances" then a half hour later started asking other neighbors for their information and wanted to know if they wanted "to go in half and half" get their ductwork cleaned. Seriously creepy shite!

  3. I guess it's slightly preferable to the spam that was going around the blogs a few years ago about some witch doctor or something who supposedly could make your ex come back to you for a fee.

  4. I suppose it's not as troublesome as threatening every creative job on the planet, but still delete, delete, delete!

  5. They haven't gotten to me yet. Kind of funny though. I find all this new AI stuff fascinating. Have been kind of tempted to work it into a post. I even asked ChatGPT some questions about baseball cards at some point. I may look into that idea again.

  6. I haven't run into this yet fortunately. Guess blogger wants us to leave and I agree on the redirect page...what a pain! I wouldn't have clicked the link if I didn't want to go there!

  7. My blog hasn't been hit yet but I've definitely seen this when google notifies me of comments after mine on other blogs. Even as an AI skeptic I've been sort of dismayed at how much it's just turned into noise that has to be filtered out rather than anything even remotely useful.

  8. Wow. I hadn't heard of that yet. The more I hear about things AI is doing the more I hate it.

Yes the "redirected notice" when you check out a blog on your reading list is a major pain. Irks me every time and they have been doing it for several years now.

  9. Every now and then I'll go back through my comments and find a spam one. I'm glad they're few and far between. Makes me feel like I should go through all six billion of them, but I quickly get over it.

  10. I'd be surprised if anyone at Google is aware that Blogger/blogspot.com still exists. I've had a ton of spam comments like this over the years, but nothing that actually attempted to make sense like these.

  11. AI-powered comments are both fascinating and concerning. It's impressive how they mimic genuine interactions, but the lack of authenticity and the potential for misuse is alarming.

  12. The irony of bots mimicking human engagement while spreading spam is unsettling. AI has taken spam to a whole new level of sophistication.

  13. I agree; the "Redirect Notice" on Blogger is unnecessary. Google should focus on solving that instead of allowing smarter spammers to invade blogs.

  14. Google's inaction on improving its own platforms while AI spammers flourish is frustrating. It feels like users are left to fend for themselves.
