Card Show Coinboxing: Dime Time

Here's "chapter 3" of my card show haul from the weekend, now onto the spoils from the dimebox dig. I ended up with 100 cards for $10.

There were a couple big caches of 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes. I basically just flipped through them quickly looking for parallels. The zip code rainbow foil stamps were originally seeded 1 per box, while the state gold stamps came 5 per box. Some dudes I collect here (the Fisk plus the 3 on the lower right), plus some trade fodder (let me know if you need any of these).

I would then turn over the stacks of Hometown Heroes and flip through trying to find any pesky SP high numbers... only I wasn't exactly sure where they started. At #300, I thought? No, I think it was lower than that. I was thinking maybe the Fergie (#258) was high enough to be a short-print, but no.. In highsight of looking it up online, the SPs run from #261 through #300. Oh well, maybe I'll remember that the next time I'm in that situation. Fergie's a PC guy for me, so no harm done there. Accidentally grabbed an extra Griffey.. anybody need one? The Upton Sportdisc is also up for grabs.

I haven't messed with 2014 Panini Golden Age much, so I had fun picking out the equivalent of a loaded pack or two with cards that caught my eye. Dig the Evel Knievel playing card.

The recent Panini products continue, now onto 2019 Diamond Kings. Don't think I've busted any of this yet, so again, this was a nice opportunity to curate a couple packs-worth of cards catered to my collecting interests. Man, I really hope Larry Walker is able to make it into the HOF (announcement due after I'm writing this, but probably before the post is published). UPDATE: YESSSSS!!!! So happy Walker made it! I was stressing out over that way more than I should have.

Here's some 2018 Ginter.. players I collect plus that cryptocurrency card which was going for crazy prices for a while shortly after this set came out (which I still believe can be attributed to dumb guys wanting to get in on the cryptocurrency train, but they didn't really get that whole thing, so they settled for buying a "cryptocurrency rookie card" as if that'll end up being worth a lot someday)-- looks like the card is rightly down to selling for about a buck now.. or a dime if you're lucky as I was.

Now we're to the point where I was running out of time to take pictures this morning before work and so just scattered the rest for a quick shot. Shiny Monte Irvin reprint, perhaps the first non-Star Wars card of Daisy Ridley in my collection, diecut Darvish, Krush fishfractor, and some other stuff that caught my eye.

And finally some potential trade fodder. The Tristar prospects on the right are all #'d /50.. meaning as a sucker for serial-numbered cards, I just couldn't pass them up for 10 cents each, even though these guys are all out of the game now without ever cracking the majors.. but maybe a team collector would want them (might have to research which organization these minor league teams correspond to) ..but yeah, let me know if you want any of them.

That wraps up my card show purchases for this month, though the day's haul also included ~1500 cards gifted to me by Rod that had a bunch of great surprises among them, but that'll have to wait for a future post, as I'm still sorting through it all. I also got a very impressive Zippy Zapping to show off at some point, plus a nice bubble mailer from John Miller, and a few neat eBay pickups I need to find time to post about soon.

Oh, speaking of packages.. heads up that most USPS postage rates for packages are increasing a bit on January 26th, so if you've got any packages you've been procrastinating on mailing out, you might want to put them in the mail by the end of the week, or expect to pay a little more starting next week. (Stamps are staying at 55 cents, so this year's price update doesn't effect PWEs.)

Card Show Coinboxing

I pulled off a coinboxing trifecta at the card show today. First I dug through a nickelbox, then I spent some time at a quarterbox, before finally wrapping up my day at a dimebox. (If only there was an elusive pennybox I could have run the table on mainstream US coin currency.) I also got handed a reusable grocery bag full of cards from my bud Rod. So no high-dollar pickups, but still a very productive day at the card show.

Chapter 1. THE NICKELBOX

Pacific Legends are great for getting cheap cards of old-timers.

Cards from some 80s sets I intend to complete one of these days.

More dudes I collect or otherwise caught my eye.

And some cards that'll likely get filed away in the for-trade boxes. Anybody want to call dibs on the Mark Grace Broder pair?

With the bulk discount, this purchase was $2 for 50 cards.

Chapter 2. THE QUARTERBOX

I'm a sucker for serial-numbered cards, especially when they're cheap and of guys I collect.

I don't have a lot of Pacific in my PCs, so don't mind snagging some when I see them cheap.

I bit on some 2014 Topps High Tek. McGriff and Eck at the top are both /99 while the others are unnumbered.

Not a whole lot in the way of vintage today, though I did score a pair of buybacks someone might need, plus a Hostess and some off-condition 50s stuff, some of which may end up with Bo.

Shield your eyes from all the shiny!

I passed up a lot of Altuve cards that I likely would have added to my stack a week ago. But as it is with my shifting opinion of him, only this one (2015 Topps Update Series - Retail Throwback Variation) made the cut.

A little surprised to find a 90s Finest refractor in a quarter box. I don't collect Conine, but couldn't leave it there.

The Baines up top is a 1st Day parallel or something.

I love these things.. what with the shiny and acetate windows.

This quarterbox purchase ended up running me an even $20 for 117 cards.. working out to 17¢ per.

card show corrosion

Thanks to everyone who's given me condolences for the loss of my pooch. I appreciate it. The cardsphere is a great bunch of folks.

I was on the fence about going to the monthly card show today, and it went down to the wire, but after breakfast, I decided to throw on some real pants head out. It turned out to be a light day for me as far as my wallet was concerned, as I think I only spent $11. But I brought home a bunch of cheap cards I can use.

Most of my time was spent at a nickelbox that featured a 25-for-$1 deal, and ended up with 125 cards for $5 (working out to 4¢ each).

I'd snag any certified auto for 4 cents, but with Heath Bell being a notable Padre.. slapped that down on my stack ASAP. And the McGriff tickles me as it's a rare example of a player spitting on his card.

Probably my favorite pickup of the day was this 1970 Kellogg's Richie Allen. Not perfect condition, but at just 4 cents, hell yeah.

Bo #/1000. Griffey and Mantle #/150, though the Moments & Milestones set barely counts for serial numbered cards.

dimebox basketball

There were a few basketball cards that made their way onto my stack during the dimebox dig from the card show a couple weeks back.

I don't think I could pass up a Crusade card in a dimebox regardless of the player (no offense to Joe Dumars, who is a HOFer). I believe this is a teal parallel, /249. Just beautiful.

This Kawhi Leonard is pretty shiny, too.

Dimebox Taoism

Oh hey I still have more dimebox cards to show you from that card show two weekends ago.

Griffey holograms! I grabbed 'em all (dupes included), so if anyone needs one, just let me know.

Without the context of this photo, I could tell you that I paid 10¢ per card for a pair of serial-numbered (/150) cards of a player who's high up on the all-time home run list.. and that might be impressive if you didn't know the set or the player.

I should stop buying A-rod cards since I have all I need (some might say more than I need. In fact everyone besides maybe Zippy Zappy would say that), but somehow they still manage to sneak onto my stack, similar to A-rod sneaking his tainted urine passed MLB's drug testers.

Nothing to do with these cards, but we're watching the Game 3 right now and my wife says she honestly isn't familiar with the "Baby Shark" song. Never even heard of it. This from a woman who's a moderator on Reddit, so she typically knows what's going on.

That's So Raven.

2002 Studio. Didn't have much (any?) from this set. Now I've got a few. Six HOFers. (Sheffield was secretly inducted but it wasn't announced in the press.)

2002 Fleer Hot Prospects is the name of the above set. Who knew that Barry Larkin was still considered a "hot prospect" in 2002? Wow! That just goes to show you how prodigious his career was.

The 2 Tinos in the post were picked up just in case the Lost Collector needed them, though I knew it was a long shot.

Here are baseball cards produced with large holes in them. The top row include metal coins in said holes (not the foil-made-to-look-like-a-coin ones, but the actual-metal-coin ones), while the bottom row have translucent pictures in the holes. I think this day must have set my personal record for most cards with holes in them obtained in one day. At least in the past few years.

I'll leave you for today with this pair of Gold Label cards from back when that meant something. Beauties!

A pocketful of dimes well spent, I'd say! I still have more from this haul that I'll likely post about soon (I think I've sorted them into modern baseball cards [big stack], and non-baseball [smaller stack].)

By the way, when I said "That's So Raven" earlier, it didn't have anything to do with cards. Hopefully nobody was like examining the photo trying to figure out what "That's So Raven" had to do with the cards pictured. I was just being silly; Sorry.
