Bowman auto master rainbow + Guys From Granite 2021 recap

Five years ago, Johnny Omahen, a guy who went to my high school, had autographs in 2016 Bowman. I went after them and soon completed the rainbow with the exception of the 1/1. That was added to the long list of cards I try to keep an eye out for, and I went about my life.

My patience paid off and that 1/1 finally popped up the other day for a reasonable buy-it-now price. I quickly pounced on it and now the rainbow is fully complete.

These Retail Prospect Autographs are "paper only", meaning no Chrome counterpart to this card. On one hand, that's nice because there are less cards for me to chase, but on the other hand it sucks because there are less cards for me to chase. LOL. I don't mind an occasional excuse to pick up some new refractors, but not this time. There were also no printing plates packed out for these, which always factors in the feasibility of completing a rainbow.

The 1/1 is officially called the "Metallic" parallel (shown here doing the spider-man meme pointing thing with the base version), but that's just a fancy way of saying grey in this instance. It'd be cool if the card was actually printed on metal or at least had some foil shine or something special like that, but nope, the design just features a touch of grey.

There's still an unofficial parallel for me to keep an eye out for: the orange Christmas Card. My copy of the orange parallel is numbered 19/25, but I hope to one day find number 12/25.

Quick bio: After graduating from Granite Hills High School, Omahen attended Cal State San Marcos and was drafted by the Marlins in the 35th round of the 2011 draft. After a rough 2012, the Marlins cut him loose. He then pitched for an independent team in 2013, impressing scouts there and signing with the Diamondbacks. Splitting time between high-A and AA, John had a nice 2015 season, going 13-3 with a 3.07 ERA, prompting the folks at Topps to give him the autograph card in 2016 Bowman. It would stand to be his only major release, though. He made it up to AAA in '16, but struggled and was done after that season.

Granite Hills H.S. gets alluded to on the back, but not namechecked.

As far as my John Omahen supercollection, now I'm only missing a stadium giveaway variation of his 2012 minor league card (the one I also have signed). I passed on it years ago because it was a little too expensive (basically the only difference is a "Cone Health" logo added), and now it doesn't seem to be available for sale anywhere.. except for as a team set, but that's a bit pricey (Jose Fernandez is the big name in the set). Oh well, it's not that interesting to me. I'm just happy I was able to complete the Bowman rainbow.

I also have a "yin" to this "yang" by way of Johnny's high school teammate, Travis Taijeron, whose only packed-out MLB card was an auto in 2018 Topps Chrome Update. So, only Chrome autos, opposed to Omahen's only paper autos. My Taijeron auto rainbow is just missing the red (non-wave) /5 and a couple printing plates. I can't find any stats for Travis since 2019, so it's safe to assume his time as a player is behind him. He made the show, though, playing in 26 games for the Mets in 2017, cracking one MLB home run to go along with 170 in the minors.

If TCDB can be trusted, Travis has 41 cards. I'll never have them all because he got Topps cards (Pro Debut and Heritage Minors) in 2012, both with printing plates that I have zero of. But not counting 1/1s, there are only 4 more Taijeron cards I'm missing. Also, I have 18 cards bearing Travis' signature (including a few of my customs), which I gotta assume is the most autos I have by one player, or at least near the top of such a list that might exist if I had my collection better cataloged and could therefore check.

With Travis riding off into the sunset, Granite no longer boasts any active players with MLB service time. Let's look to the minors now and see who could possibly be the next guy from Granite to get the call.

Welp, it won't be Jordan Verdon. He retired just before the start of the 2021 season. A 23rd round draft pick by Detroit in 2018, Jordan finishes his pro career with a .246 batting average and a lone home run in 84 games. Really sucks for guys like him that the 2020 MiLB season was canceled, stalling their attempt at climbing up the ladder. Glad he had the one card released (above), at least, so he can be represented in my collection (Bummer that my TTM attempt from 2019 [using a custom I made] didn't bear fruit). Best of luck in the next chapter of your life, Jordan!

Ooh, here's a new guy I wasn't familiar with until researching this post: Dillan Shrum. Dillan had a nice returning-senior season at University of Nevada in 2021 with an OPS of 1.490 in 35 games. Looks like he signed with the Royals as an undrafted free-agent and played in 17 professional games this season. I'll have to keep my eye on him (and hope he gets cards).

Like Dillan, Trenton Brooks is another guy who attended Nevada after Granite Hills (I think they narrowly missed being amateur teammates by a year). He's in the Cleveland chain, and looks like they moved him to first base from the outfield this year. After spending the first month of the season at AA, Trenton got promoted to AAA Columbus and held his own. Maybe-just-maybe he'll get into some mainstream card sets next year and challenge for a spot on the Guardians' 40-man roster. Good luck, Trenton!

Andrew Brown is another guy from Granite who saw a mid-season promotion this year, making the jump to AA after a strong showing in high-A. The Phillies farmhand seems to have been moved to the pen after being a starter much of his pro career. I'm sure Philadelphia is always hungry for live arms, so there should be solid odds on Andrew becoming the 9th player from our high school to crack the bigs. Fingers crossed for ya, Andrew!

Much of the minor league cards in this post were purchased from Go Sports Cards. They are one of the biggest sellers on eBay for modern minor league cards, though I've found you can usually save money by purchasing from their website. Anyways, for this year's order, I was accidentally sent a Ben Brown (not a Guy From Granite) from the 2021 Jersey Shore Blueclaws set, when I had actually ordered Andrew Brown. Joe, the card shop guy, was very responsive and put the correct card in the mail to me on the next business day. A+ service.

I'm glad Joe let me keep the Ben Brown card. I'm really amused that Ben's birthdate is 9-9-99. And on top of that, he's 6'6" (which upside-down is ,,9,9). (I'll even bet his favorite tv show is Brooklyn 99.) Looks like he missed most of 2021 due to injury. Let's hope he's got more of his 9 lives left and comes back strong in '22.

Go GHHS Eagles and thanks for stopping by.

Rainbow in the Dark

I'm still living in a giant smoke cloud, stuck inside with record-breaking bad air quality. It's supposed to ease up around Thursday or Friday. At least the wildfires haven't been moving closer to me, but they're still uncontained.

While I wait for the sky to clear and that metaphorical rainbow to stretch over the city, I've acquired a baseball card rainbow. 🌈

Base, Purple (/150), Silver (/99), and Blue (/25). All that's left is the Gold 1/1, but I haven't seen that surface yet. No printing plates are included in the auto set this year, which on one hand is kind of a bummer, but at least there's less for me to worry about. I think my favorite of these is the grey one, with the border matching the Yankees uniform.

According to the back, he still lives in El Cajon, so that's cool. I just did a Shane Spencer PC post last month when I first learned about this 2020 Topps Archives autograph, so I won't rehash too much, but he's a guy who graduated from Granite Hills High School a couple years before I started going there. Neat to think I walked down the same halls and pissed in the same locker room urinals as a future World Series champ. lol. Probably had some of the same teachers, too.

Shane Spencer is the second Topps Archives autograph rainbow I've gone after. The first was back in 2014 when Bip Roberts unexpectedly got a card. What the heck, let's revisit that one real quick.....

Base, Gold (/50), Silver (/25), Purple (/10), Blue (/5), and a couple printing plates. Apparently there's also a 1/1 Red parallel out there, plus the remaining two plates, of course. I still have a saved search for them, so maybe someday I'll add to this group. These parallels are pretty underwhelming thanks to Topps' baffling refusal to modify the 1990 Topps border at all, instead just putting a tint on the background of the photo. The silver looks the same as the base, and the purple looks pretty similar to the "sapphire" (blue). So that's lame. But still a lot of fun piecing together a Bip rainbow.

Rock on.

Superfractor Supercollection

Boom! I was excited to see the 2014 Bowman Draft Gavin LaValley superfractor pop up for auction last week. I put in a healthy bid and ended up winning it for surprisingly less than I was expecting. This is a card I've rainbowed pretty hard the past few years, with nothing left to chase but a frustrating number of 1/1s. So yeah, this is an awesome card to highlight not only the rainbow, but my LaValley PC as a whole.

Plus now I can do this...

There are currently 3 superfractors of Gavin LaValley in existence, and I've got all of 'em. Nice!
2014 Bowman Draft, 2014 Bowman Chrome Mini, and 2018 Bowman.
Seeing them side-by-side emphases how unimpressive 2018 superfractors look compared to how bright and shiny the 2014 versions are, especially in hand. The '14 cards have a nice "spinning wheels" effect, while '18 just sits there.

Signs point to LaValley being included in 2018 Bowman Chrome (the separate product, not to be confused with the Chrome segment included in 2018 Bowman [Regular]), due out in September. And perhaps 2018 Bowman Chrome Mini, assuming that's still a thing (factory set). So my LaValley superfractor supercollection won't likely stay complete for long, but I'll enjoy the supercompleteness for the next several weeks, at least.

The only other superfractor I own is Brian Humphries (Guy From Granite). The first three I bought set me back a decent chunk of change, while the latest was only about a third of what I was used to paying. Maybe it's because LaValley has been hovering around the Mendoza line most of 2018 in AA. Hopefully he turns his season around.

But still, very happy with the pickup. It's a pain there are so many 1/1s left out there before I can officially complete the rainbow for 2014 Bowman Draft + Mini:
o Topps Vault First Edition blank back 1/1
o Orange paper 1/1
o Black paper 1/1
o White Ice 1/1
Plus several printing plates.

I'm not hitting his 2018 Bowman rainbow nearly as hard, but still keep an eye out for good deals, such as a few parallels that were being sold together in a lot. Always love atomic and shimmer refractors.

Also snagged the magenta paper printing plate.

That brings me up to 3 magenta plates for LaValley.

But yellow is still on top..

..with 4 plates!

I've only got 1 cyan plate.. and surprisingly zero black plates. But I'll keep an eye out.

Since I'm showing off all my LaValley 1/1s in this post, let's go ahead and revisit his 2014 Panini Prizim Draft auto Black Finite Prizm (that set's version of a superfractor). Nice looking card I scored a couple years ago.

And let's wrap up this post with another look at the "1st Bowman" superfractor. Terrific addition to what's probably my most impressive player collection. Now he just needs to turn into the next Mike Trout and I'll be set for life! LOL, nah, he's a fun dude for me to collect, without worrying about any "investment" stuff. But I'm hoping for the best for him in his career.

Thanks for swinging by.

Rainbow Complete! Gavin LaValley 2014 Prizm Draft auto

There were 9 different versions of Gavin LaValley's autograph card in 2014 Panini Prizm Perennial Draft Picks And Prospects Extravaganza or whatever it was officially called. Only one 1/1 (thankfully no printing plates), so it was do-able. Took me a little over 2 years, but I just now completed the rainbow. The gold /10 was the last one I bought [eBay], though the green /35 was the last to arrive, a COMC pickup.

Now, this rainbow only counts for his autograph card. LaValley also has a base card in the product (different photo, so different rainbow.. in my eyes, at least). Still missing a couple low-numbered cards for that one. But yeah, for now, let's give this rainbow its moment in the sun...

base

Press Proof, /199

Purple, /149

Red, /100

Blue Mojo, /75

Orange, /60

Green, /35

Gold, /10

Black Finite, 1/1
Feels good to have finished off that goal! This is the biggest rainbow I've ever completed, and it'll likely be a long while till I top it.

Cavalcade of Gavins (Gavalcade!) 2015 Gavin Floyd

I guess I'm sorta working on a rainbow of Gavin Floyd's 2015 Topps Series 2 card after a few eBay pickups over the past 3 weeks or so.

10/10 acetate

This is my first of these acetate parallels Topps has been doing the past couple years. They always get rave reviews on the cardsphere, so I was just waiting for an excuse to pick up one for a decent price of a guy I collect, and this one fit the bill. Pretty cool card.

The back in its reversed, grey glory. Ooh look, the 10/10 becomes a 01/01!

20/20 silver frame

These framed parallels are great looking cards and feel great in hand. Holding it makes me feel like a giant holding a tiny framed picture. I wish I had a dollhouse I could hang it in! lol

1/1 Topps Vault blank back

These Topps Vault 1/1 blank backs are definitely a "poor man's 1/1" but still cool when you can pick them up for a reasonable price. I put in a low bid of $11.11 on this (opening bid is $9.95) and won it with exactly my max bid.

Blank with a sticker hologram.

Excuse the extreme butt shot..

I just wanted to point out Topps has (recently?) begun watermarking these cards with an indented circle of text. It reads "AUTHENTIC TOPPS VAULT" or words to that effect.

Base

The guy who sold me the acetate kindly threw in the base card as a surprise bonus. I needed it, so I was very happy about that!

Rainbow's off to a good start.

So, I've got a 20/20, a 10/10, and a 1/1. How cool would it be to complete the rainbow with the last number of each printing run? I need the gold 2015/2015, the snow camo 99/99, the black 64/64, the pink 50/50 (Joy! a pink Floyd!), and I suppose the 1/1s. I don't think it'd ever happen-- especially because eBay sellers often don't bother to list the serial number on the gold parallels-- but it's a neat thought. As far as unnumbered cards, I still need the foil parallel.

This is Gavin Floyd's only card as an Indian so far, I believe. The photo is actually 'shopped from his time on the Braves last year. Here's the original via Getty Images:

I hope he gets off the disabled list soon and gets a chance to pitch this year, but we'll see. At least his injury is keeping his card prices down so these low-numbered parallels aren't too hard to chase.

more LaValley cards (a rainbow through the clouds)

Nobody reads these Gavin LaValley rainbow updates of mine, so I'm just going to make fart noises rather than bother to type sentences.
