Rocktober is in full swing! (CONTEST!)

#1) As promised, my new setblog dedicated to 1991 MusiCards is up and running. I'm really excited about it and I hope you'll check it out and follow along.

#2) CONTEST!! CONTEST!! I'M RUNNING A CONTEST!!

To help get a few more eyes on it, I'm offering up some solid cards in a contest where all you've got to do is check out the intro post of the new blog and comment mentioning a couple bands you like.
These are the six fine cards in the prize pool up for grabs (winner picks one). Check out THIS POST {LINK!} for all the details.

And even if you're not interested in the contest, it sure would be doing your ol' pal Gavin a solid if you'd head over to 1991musicards.blogspot.com and follow/bookmark it and take the journey with me through the incredible beast that is 1991 Pro Set SuperStars MusiCards. I think it'll be a good time for everyone!

#3) The 2019 MLB Post Season™ is upon us!

My postseason rooting interests are as follows:

AL: anybody but the Yankees

NL: anybody but the Dodgers

(No offense to my NY/LA-fan readers. Enviable franchise you've got there, no doubt.)

#4) Fergie Jenkins refractor auto

Isn't this a beautiful card!?!

Another 2003 Retired refractor auto for my collection. Love 'em!

back to more random card show pickups

I've been distracted by ballgames n' Musials n' stuff, but now let's return to my haul from last weekend's card show. All the cards in this post aren't intended to stay in my collection. I suppose this is a "trade bait" post. But hey, today is my blog's 6th anniversary, so I guess it should be a contest-type post too. I don't think I have it in me right now to do a big, drawn out contest-event thing, so let's just make it easy and say the first 3 people who comment can pick one of these lots to receive in a PWE as a prize. (UPDATE: the 3 winners have spoken. Thanks, everybody.) Say which lot number you'd like in the comment, first come first served. Oh, and you have to have already left at least one comment on my blog this year to be eligible! Sorry, lurkers and prize hounds. Thanks and good luck!

#1 - a pair of autos

#2 Yankees lot

#3 White Sox autos

#4 Cubs lot

#5 Pirates autos

Now the lots aren't exactly all from the recent card show, but I'm also mixing in some other tradeable stuff I've had sitting around looking for a new home.

#6 Reds autos

#7 More Reds plus Tom Seaver lot

#8 Kirby Puckett lot plus a low-numbered Twins prospect

#9 various

#10 Giants autos

#11 auto racing lot

#12 various

#13 basketball lot

#14 football lot
#15 various

#16 George Brett lot

#17 Ozzie Smith lot ('79 is a CYMTO reprint)

#18 partial '89 Mother's Giants set missing a few cards

#19 Bowman football auto lot

#20 Upper Deck football auto lot

#21 more football autos

#22 yet more football autos I'm trying to get rid of

#23 Jeff Niemann auto/relic

#24 more various baseball autos

That's it. The first 3 lots to get called dibs on in the comments below will be 6th Blogiversary Celebration prizes. After that, what's remaining is up for trade. I've got a big wantlist with lots of sets I'm working on and players I collect, so take a look and drop me a line if you'd like to swing an easy swap. Thanks!

A birthday box of 2018 Topps Tribute

Merry Christmas, everybody! My mom has had a hot streak of getting me great high-end boxes for my birthday. First there was a box with two Mike Trout autos, and then a box with a Trout 1/1.

Will this year's box carry on the tradition?

Boom! It's not Trout, but this is still a terrific start to the box! I've got one Kris Bryant auto already, but it's an unlicensed Panini card so I'm thrilled to be able to add a legit-Cubs autograph to the PC. From peeking on eBay, looks like this card is already "live" so shouldn't take me long to redeem it.

As for the other autos in the box, there were a couple young guys with promise who haven't quite put it together yet (Bradley Zimmer [orange /25] and Lewis Brinson [green /99]), and an old guy, HOFer Phil Niekro [/65]. The box promises 3 autos, so that means the Bryant redemption was just a sweet bonus.

Lots of star-power with the relics, though the jersey pieces themselves are nothing special, just boring grey or white jersey swatches. But hey, they're all numbered under 100 and I sorta collect all these dudes, so I'm happy with these pulls. Max Scherzer, Ichiro, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo.

Decent base cards, too. Trout doesn't get shutout. The Benintendi is a numbered parallel (/99).

Good stuff.. thanks, Mom! No Mike Trout hits, but still plenty of good cards for my collection.

As for my December 24th otherwise, it was a nice evening at the in-laws. I'm a little sick of It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street every damn year, but it makes my mother-in-law happy, so I can deal with it, lol. It was a nice birthday. On social media, despite a few solid tweets, I lost 2 or 3 followers (what kind of monster unfollows someone on their birthday?!)-- can't please all the people all the time, I guess. Screw 'em. But yeah, was a good birthday overall.

A few classic pics from Baseball Card Breakdown's Christmas past.

Did you know that the holiday season of Christmas actually lasts for 12 days and begins on 12/25? Yep, while counting down to Christmas might be more popular these days, the 12 Days of Christmas technically lasts into January.

Going old school, I've got a 12 Days of Christmas giveaway starting now. Here are the rules: The eligible people are listed below, thanks to their recent commenting.. always appreciated. Y'all only get one pick.. once you successfully claim a prize, you're done. Just be the first eligible person to pick a prize (from the prize pool) by commenting on this post. Go! [Update: Chris took Day One, claiming the Tiant auto] Once there's a winner, you'll have to wait till the next day for your chance to pick again. And be specific.. if you just say "give me whatever" or something like that, your pick won't count.

Manny Machado PC (1300th Post and a contest)

Well, dang it, I've come to another big round number. This one is a little scary for me, as I'm an admitted semi triskaidekaphobe. I'm not super militant against it, but like when my car stereo had a numeral volume level, I would set it at 12 or 14, even though 13 was the optimal setting.. and at the gym when I ride the exercise bike, I never set the resistance on 13, just because I'm weak minded and think maybe it will bring bad luck (like a douchey guy will enter the gym. Full disclosure I don't like most of the other regulars at my work gym, but I'm just easily annoyed.)

As far as baseball players who were brave enough to wear jersey number 13, the best active player is Manny Machado (I guess Hanley Ramirez isn't officially retired yet.. but.. you know.)

(Edit: whoops, missed Greinke up there. But he no longer wears #13, so whatever.)

So I figured I'd use this as an excuse to sort out my Manny Machado PC and show it off.

Here are my earliest cards of him. His "1st Bowman" is in 2010.. would be nice to add one someday. And he's got some Team USA cards in 2009.

Lots of 2013 RCs.

2014 pt 1, featuring my only relic card of the guy.

2014 pt 2.

2015 pt 1

2015 pt 2

2016 pt 1. Here's another look at the only Manny Machado auto I've got.. I like it! Another nice pickup from 2016 Topps The Mint.
And check out those 2 cards on the bottom.. Sure seem to be from the same photoshoot, but one has a real background, and the other has an "enhanced for Heritage" background by Topps. Funny.

2016 pt 2

2016 pt 3.

2016 pt 4

2017 pt 1

2017 pt 2, featuring a plastic Jackie "patch".

2017 pt 3.

2017 pt 4, including a half-assed sketchcard I made.

And finally 2018.

By my count, that's 97 unique cards. And I know for a fact I've got other cards from him sitting in 3 complete sets that I didn't bother digging out for this post, so I think I can now consider him a member of my Hundred Card Club. As such, I'll likely bump him off my official wantlist soon, though I'll still be happy to accept any cards of his I don't have, via trades or opening packs. He's an exciting young player and fun to watch. Doesn't look like he'll be with the Orioles much longer; it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

Here's a pile of dupes I weeded out while sorting the PC. Available for trade!

I'd hate to do a milestone-number post without a contest, and it's been a while, so let's do it. Just leave a comment on this post to enter, and I'll random off a winner in a few days. The prize will be some solid cards tailored to the winner's collecting preference. I'll do a little shopping if necessary. If the winner hasn't commented on any of my other posts so far in 2018, the prize will be a PWE. (Come on, guys, don't be afraid to comment on non-contest posts! I know I'm not always the best at replying to comments unless I've got something to add, but the interaction/feedback is much appreciated.) Otherwise it'll probably be a more substantial package.

Thanks as always for reading and have a great weekend!

Holy shit. I just remembered today is my blog's anniversary. Seriously, I typed up this whole thing and then it hit me. Baseball Card Breakdown turns 5 today! What a coincidence that it's also the 1300th post. (Funny enough, my 500th post was on the 2 year anniversary, though I sorta planned for that one to coincide.) Ok, I guess I'll have to pick a couple winners, one celebrating the 1300th post, and another celebrating 5 years. So yeah, comment below to be entered in both. Thanks!

(UPDATE 6/19/18: ok, the entry period is now closed. Thanks to all who entered!)
