Taking my Wil Myers collection to the next level

That title makes it sound like I'm going steady with my Wil Myers PC. Well maybe I am!!

I'm still playing catch-up with my blog reading and writing after a busy weekend. Sorry I missed getting a post up yesterday for Tony Gwynn's birthday. I should try to get a "Top 10 cards of your favorite player" post up for that Collecting Cutch contest going around, but don't know if I'll get the chance by the deadline.

Well, as a consolation, here's a post with big pickups of my favorite current Padre, Wil Myers.

Boom! Now I can call myself one of the Top 500 Wil Myers collectors out there. Yep, I ponied up for a 1st Bowman Card refractor auto, the gold standard for, well, key cards of players who have such a card. This one is a beaut, back from Wil's early days as a catching prospect with the Royals. If I were the type of collector who sends in cards to be graded, I'd probably send in this one. Looks like Wil doodled a picture of some seagulls instead of signing his name, but it's fine.

There's the back, 024/500. As far as any loose significance in the #24, well, my birthday's on the 24th, so maybe I put a few extra bucks in my bid because of it, I'll admit.

And here's my first 2017 Topps Now card, commemorating Wil's cycle from a month ago today. Not the most interesting photo, but it'll do. I was a little chagrined to see a different (cooler looking) version of this card that's only available if you bought the special pre-season package of Topps Now Padres cards, which was pretty expensive, if I recall. Only 27 people bothered shelling out for that package, so that card is a lot more scarce/expensive (eBay link). This regular one had a print run of 589 and set me back $6.75 shipped from an eBay seller.

I haven't been watching much of their games this season, but I was lucky to catch the cycle-clinching triple live on TV. It'll likely stand as the top Padre highlight of 2017, so figured I'd pick up the card.
Regarding the back.. I think the Lost Collector just mentioned it recently, but otherwise I hadn't heard about the backs of Topps Now cards being refractory these days. Are all the 2017 Now card like this? Personally I think the rainbow sheen would be cooler on the front and is pretty much wasted on the back. But whatever.. props to Topps for putting in a little extra effort, at least. Plus it makes them a bit harder to counterfeit, I'd imagine. I still think they should serial number these things, even if it adds a day or two to their turnaround time.

Finally, here's a relatively cheap auto I picked up on COMC in my excitement on the day Wil hit for the cycle.. Eh, I just felt like commemorating the moment in my collection with a special new card. I did look for a card serial numbered 4/10, since it happened on April 10th.. but couldn't find a good, reasonably priced one, instead settling on this 5/30 auto for $7 or so. Hey, May 30th is a fine day, too, I guess.

Thanks for stopping by.

    1. I think I might have it.. I'm due for sorting incoming cards. And Bowman cards kinda blur together. But free free to set it aside for me. Thanks for thinking of me!

  4. I've been so busy too with end of the year stuff at school and other stuff that I totally forgot about Gwynn's birthday. Maybe I should add it to my phone like I do with everyone else's birthday.

    P.S. Sweet Myers!

    1. Thanks, Fuji. Twitter seems to let me know of any baseball players with a birthday happening. Of course, for drafting up a post, it'd be nice to have a day or two advance heads up. LOL
