2017 Topps design revealed

Topps unveiled their 2017 flagship design this morning via this Clayton Kershaw mock up. Figured I'd jump and get a quick post out of it (I know not everybody is on Twitter).

What do you think?

I was kinda hoping they'd go back to borders next year. At least the "fog" is limited to the bottom. I wonder how they're gonna handle parallels with this.. or horizontal cards, for that matter. Looks more like an insert than a base card, but could be worse I guess. Makes me think of Legos. I wonder if that red stripe is going to be on every card, or will it be different colors for different teams.. because here it looks kinda like a trail of blood on a blade.

  1. Yeah, I'm not a fan design. It looks like roads to me. I would have looked nicer if they eliminated all that unnecessary background image stuff behind the name and logo.

  2. Ugh, that is one ugly design. I would've preferred a return to borders and a simple design after this year's mess.

  3. 1st Impression... it's okay. Don't hate it. Don't love it. As soon as you mentioned Legos it stuck with me. But originally I kept thinking this card reminded me of Upper Deck X or something. One thing I really like is that they didn't chop off any of Kershaw's limbs (although they covered up parts of his feet and legs).

  4. It looks like something from a 3D video game - Not a fan

  5. I'm not on Twitter so thanks for the peek! Not sure how I feel about it just yet but it's certainly better than 2016.

  6. It looks like the Topps logo and the Los Angeles Dodgers script will both be silver foil. I don't dislike the design but a Topps flagship without borders just seems odd.

  7. It's better than last year, but I hope the smoke effect and no foil except for Topps logo don't start becoming trends.

  8. My thoughts: it's just another year. Some will like it, some won't. There will be another design in 2018.

  9. I have a feeling these are going to be awesome in Chrome form next year.

  10. It's *interesting*.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards "I like it", but I'd have to see more.

...but part of me is looking at this design in the sweltering heat and humidity of August and I'm getting nostalgic for the day when we didn't know what the cards would look like until packs showed up in the early Spring. End of "Old Man Rant" # 297.

  11. If it is a red stripe for every team we have this set's name - the "Blood on the Blade" set.

  13. Look out for a Trump card in the stands. 2017 design is ok! It looks like one card stacked on top of each other. If you want borders you'll have to wait for the heritage 1968 cards. I bet there will be a lot of so called error cards in this one. Happy collecting friends..
