Courtside seats to kill for

This made the rounds on Twitter this past week, but hey, here's a quick post for those of you not on Twitter. Mark Jackson 1990-91 NBA Hoops #205 features the infamous Menendez Brothers in the crowd. Ever since this has become commonly known, the card is selling very well, like frequently over $10.. even topping $20. It's sold out on COMC. We're talking about a base card of a good but ultimately "non-star" player in a very overproduced set.

As a collector, it's kinda cool to see, even if a bit dark and morbid. I think I had one of these as a kid but long since parted with it. Oh well. (Billy, do you have a dupe for me? LOL)

How cool is it that a dimebox common could suddenly become a desirable card decades later? (I dream of my hoard of 1990 Upper Deck Marquis Grissom rookie cards skyrocketing in value.) Can you think of any other similar examples?

  1. That's crazy, I hadn't heard that story before. But I know of a similar card. Sylvain Turgeon's 1994-95 Pinnacle issue shows a 5-year old Patrick Kane in the front row. Once Kane became an NHL star himself (moreso than Turgeon) the card went from 10 cents to 10 bucks.

  2. I probably do. I have a ton of this set. I'll set it aside for the next mailing if I can locate it.

  3. I don't collect/watch basketball -- and haven't for a long time -- but I'm kinda surprised I hadn't heard about this card before. It's eerily fascinating.

  4. Fascinating.

People are trying to look for that next 1990 Fleer Juan Uribe gimmick.

  5. i can't use the word "oddball" for this one. i wonder if these men have any idea they're captured forever on a sportscard. They should each have a copy since they'll never be attending another game...EVER!

  6. Interesting post! Eerie, yet cool.

As previously mentioned, the only similar card that comes to mind is the 1995 Pinnacle Sylvian Turgeon card featuring Patrick Kane and his Dad in the seats behind the glass.

  7. This same set has the Sam Vincent card with Michael Jordan in the photo wearing the #12 jersey, that one is still obtainable but definitely sells for more than a common normally would from that set.

It's debatable, but the 89 Fleer Billy Ripken could fall under the same category of novelty, but that's more of an error card than anything else.

1971 Topps Bud Harrelson card has Nolan Ryan in it, but he was the starting pitcher so that's not too outlandish.

  8. Man... that's a pretty cool piece of cardboard history. I've dumped a lot of 1990-91 Hoops off at Goodwill over the years. Someone is sitting on some hidden treasure.

  9. We sold two at work, one on Amazon for $33 and one on a 24-hour eBay auction (just for laughs) that ended at $18 and change. We've sold multiple boxes of Series 1 on Amazon for $40 since yesterday.

    Craziness.
