Card Show Confession

I'll be honest with you, I've got no idea what time my local monthly card show starts. I think the earliest I've ever shown up was 9:30 and there was plenty of action by then. I feel like I should try to get their earlier for first crack at going through bins and whatnot, but I definitely value my mornings, easing into my day and sleeping in on the weekends. Maybe one of these months I'll try to get there around 8 and see if the early birds catch any worms around then.

Today wasn't that day, though, as I slept in until almost 9. My wife and I were out late the night before catching a play that a couple of our friends are involved with. But I still got out of the house by 10, and although it seemed like I caught more red lights than usual, didn't take me long to get there.

I made 3 purchases at the show: $21 worth from Bill's 3-for-a-dollar bins, 50 cards for $2 from a nickelbox, and what I'll be showing today, $55 for a few vintage cards.

Al Kaline is a big name to check off my '64 setbuild. A couple fisheyes near the bottom (one of them cutely dotting the "i"), but still great condition.

This sharp Dick Allen rookie for $5 was a sweet deal. I already had one of these in the PC, but it's nice to pick up another one for the setbuild.

So those were a couple key '64s I was after. The rest of these are '57s. Just last night I pulled the trigger on a marquee name '57 with help from the 20% eBay coupon code (thanks again, Raz!) but I'll wait to post about that till it's in hand. But perhaps inspired by that big pickup, I knocked a few more stars off my slowburning '57 setbuild.

This Don Newcombe isn't in great shape (some light pencil marks on the back), but a very cool card of the former MVP. Don is still kicking at 91.

I just watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story again the other day on Netflix. Funny movie. Lookalike 5-time WS champ Bill "Moose" Skowron probably has an interesting life story as well.

Hank Bauer scoffs at only five rings, as he got himself seven during his playing career with the Yankees, plus an 8th helming the Orioles later on. Damn! This card could be upgraded someday, but is good enough for me for now.

HOFer Red Schoendienst turned 95 last month. I think he still shows up to Cardinals spring camp as a special instructor. That's a life well lived.

You don't hear the name George Kell much these days, but the 10-time All-Star is in the Hall. Nice late-career card of him.

One last card to show today, but before we get there, make sure you've got your tickets....

---Tickets to the gun showwwwwwwww.........

1957 Topps has a handful of iconic cards, and this is undoubtedly among the top. Ted Kluszewski taking a big cut while rockin' the rare baseball uniform vest. Very happy to bring this classic into my '57 setbuild.

More from my card show haul coming soon. Thanks for visiting.

    1. Pretty good, thanks for asking. Always nice to get in a little live entertainment once in a while.

  2. I don't know if things have changed in the last three years or not, but I always tried to get to that show by 8am, half the dealers usually weren't even set up yet, but I always found plenty of deals from the one's who were... plus you'll usually get first crack at the guy's who do set up a little later.

    1. Cool. Yeah, I should really try to get there around 8 one of these days.

  3. I only go to card shows based on when a guest I'm interested in appears. Usually they show up around 1 so I make sure to get to the place by 12:30.

    1. My local show never has signers, unfortunately, but it's always free admission, so I can't really complain.

  4. I actually don't know what time my local card show starts, either. I'd guess 9, but I rarely get there before 10 anyways. Love the pickups here! I recently added a '57 Klu to my collection (what a terrific card) and I need to pick up a copy of that Kell. There aren't many cards of him as an Oriole. Looking forward to seeing more of the haul!

    1. Thanks, Nick. The dealer also had a nice '64 Drysdale for $5 which I would have jumped on if I didn't already have that one.

  5. Dang. That Dick Allen rookie card is super clean. Nice pickups. Are these card shows monthly? I'll be in Portland sometime this summer and would love to try and attend.

    1. Yep, they're monthly. You should definitely try to lineup a trip to Portland with the card show if possible! It's the Mall 205 show and you can see the schedule at their site twinoaksshows.com

    2. Looks like they tend to be the 2nd weekend of every month. Sadly I'll either be there on the last weekend of July or the 1st weekend of August. Any solid card shops I can check out instead?

    3. I think there's supposed to be a decent shop or two up here, but honestly I haven't been to any yet. I figure between the monthly card show and online shopping, I spend enough on cards as it is, but maybe someday I'll try to check them out.

    4. Bummer. Hopefully... one of my trips will eventually line up with the monthly card show.
